Aptly named Stilt, with long needle-like pink legs, this is a resident breeder and winter visitor. It is found in shallow areas of water, from lakes and ponds to industrial lagoons. When disturbed it flies off, calling noisily. Using its long legs it can wade slowly and delicately in water and mud to find the small aquatic animals on which it feeds. Males and females are similar, though in breeding dress the males sometime have black on the head.
