A secretive winter visitor that is most frequently found feeding quietly at the foot of reed beds and by vegetation at the edge of lakes and ponds. With patience and a bit of luck, the male's stunning colours can be seen. Females and young birds lack the extensive red and blue chest bands of the male. Its shy nature means the Bluethroat is more often heard than seen, its quiet rattling and harsh "tcheck" calls revealing its presence in the dense cover.
