This is a resident breeder found on or near water. It feeds on plants and small aquatic animals. Although often shy, hiding in dense reeds and marshy vegetation, it can sometimes be seen out in the open walking on grassy areas searching for food. Both the male and female have distinctive waxy-looking red and yellow bills, and have dark brown plumage with a white flash between the body and wings. Both sexes show a white bottom.
