  • Description
  • A breeding resident whose population most probably arose from the release of captive birds brought into the country from Asia. This tiny finch-like species feeds unobtrusively in tall stands of grass, eating the seeds. It is usually encountered in pairs or small flocks and often can be approached closely. However, when disturbed it flies rapidly with whirring wings uttering a distinctive, high-pitched twinkling call.
