This is the smallest of the world's wading birds, being not much larger than a House Sparrow. Yet it is a passage migrant and winter visitor from nesting grounds in the high Arctic. Some populations fly as far as the tip of South Africa to spend the winter. It is an energetic bird, never stopping to pause for long while it runs across the open mud of seashore and lagoons as well as wet fields looking for food.
