A spring and autumn passage migrant that is frequently overlooked due to its unobtrusive habits. In spring, the male's green and yellow head with pinky-orange breast is distinctive. The female is less vividly coloured. Autumn plumage is more subdued, typically browner and streakier. It feeds on cultivated areas including fields with short grass and rough broken ground, and will fly onto telegraph wires, fences and into bushes when disturbed.
