Another recently recognised species which is closely related to the Daurian Shrike and which is a spring and autumn migrant and rare winter visitor. Unlike the Daurian Shrike, it has rich dark brown upperparts, often with a reddish crown and white stripe over the eye, and usually it is crisp white on the underside. Some individuals are very difficult to tell apart from Daurian Shrike. When agitated it utters a harsh rattling call.
