A spring and autumn passage migrant of open country, bushes and fields. Its black and white plumage with chestnut red cap make it easy to identify. Females are similarly patterned to males, though slightly duller in colouration. Like all Shrikes, it sits on a prominent perch waiting to grab insects, small reptiles and occasionally birds. When disturbed it will disappear deep into the cover of a bush or tree. It is usually silent while on migration.
