  • Description
  • The Common Redstart is a migratory bird seen in Qatar during spring and autumn. While its migration overlaps with the Black Redstart, differences in appearance and behavior help distinguish the two species. Known for its striking plumage and unique tail movements, the Common Redstart is most active in Qatar during spring. Habitat & Behavior The Common Redstart is often found perched on shaded branches, fence posts, tree stumps, or even man-made objects like barrels. It prefers areas with open ground where it hunts for insects by waiting patiently and then making short flights to catch prey. It frequently returns to the same perch after capturing its food. One notable behavior is its habit of "shivering" its tail, a trait shared with the Black Redstart. Appearance & Physical Characteristics Males: Two forms: One form, called Ehrenberg's Redstart, has a large white patch on its wing. The other form lacks this white patch. Less extensive black on the breast compared to the Black Redstart. Distinctive white forehead, a key identification feature. Females and Juveniles: Paler and less colorful than males. More subdued coloration, often confused with the Black Redstart but generally lighter overall. Size and Comparison The Common Redstart is similar in size to the Black Redstart but can be distinguished by its white forehead in males, lighter overall appearance in females, and less extensive black on the breast. Its tail-shivering behavior is shared with the Black Redstart, adding to the challenge of identification during their overlapping migrations. Seasonal Presence Spring Migration: Most active from February to May, with peak sightings in April and May, after most Black Redstarts have departed. Autumn Migration: Less common, with sightings in September and October.
