  • Description
  • The Laughing Dove, also known as the "Palm Dove," is a charismatic and common resident breeder in Qatar. It is named after its cheerful, bubbly cooing call, which resembles laughter. This small dove is highly adaptable and found across a wide range of habitats, making it one of the most widespread bird species in the region. Habitat & Behavior Preferred Habitats: Found in parks, gardens, hotel grounds, plantations, towns, villages, desert camps, and oases. Frequently observed pecking at the ground in barren parking lots, dusty areas, or among bushes and trees. Nesting: Builds flimsy nests from twigs, usually placed in trees, on window ledges, or parapets. Nests are often fragile and may be dislodged by the wind, sometimes leading to fallen eggs or chicks. Behavior: Often seen foraging on the ground for seeds and small food items. Known to linger on roads until the last moment before flying away. Perches on rooftops, aerials, telephone wires, and trees. Feeds primarily on seeds but also consumes small insects. Appearance & Physical Characteristics Adults: Both males and females share warm brown plumage with intricate blue, bronze, pink, grey, and black patterns, adding a delicate beauty when observed closely. Young Birds: Lack the distinctive black neck spots found in adults. Call The Laughing Dove’s soft, bubbly cooing is its signature sound, often described as “doo, doo, dooh, dooh, do.” This call resembles laughter and gives the bird its name. When landing or flying, it may emit a high-pitched, discordant squeal. Size and Comparison The Laughing Dove is a small and slender dove, smaller and more delicate compared to the Eurasian Collared Dove. Its intricate plumage makes it a standout species when seen up close. Seasonal Presence The Laughing Dove is a year-round resident in Qatar, active and visible in both urban and rural environments across all seasons. This dove’s adaptability, vibrant plumage, melodic call, and close association with human environments make it a charming and familiar presence throughout Qatar.
